New Year. New Pet?

For many of us, January has felt like a full year already. Yes, 2022 has begun with quite the whirlwind. A new year, new resolutions, a commitment to lifestyle changes, continued stressors to health and safety for you and your family, and endeavoring toward yet a new normalcy in our everyday lives. Exhausted yet?

But after all of that, does your new year happen to include a new canine or feline as a part of your family? Sometimes even in the midst of chaos the right little furball comes along (coincidentally around the holidays, perhaps?), steals your heart, and makes your family whole.

So, what do you need to know about having this new addition to your home? Let’s find out!

Don’t
Underestimate the Responsibility of Pet Ownership

Many growing families will sign up as new pet owners to see how well they’ll do with the triumphs and tribulations of parenthood. But don’t be too naïve. You’re not a new pet parent to teach your pup or kitten their way in the world, how to feed itself, or hold a job. Some of those parallels end in the newborn/infant stage of childhood. Your world will certainly change. There will be lots of accidents to clean up, new chores, and responsibilities to add to your daily routine with feeding times, walks, and playtime. It will be hard! But completely worth it.

Make Room

Be sure your new doggo or kitty has their own space to call their own at first. This might be a small bathroom or laundry room to start. Let them explore the space and get used to the new sights and smells before slowly making their world a bit bigger at a time.

Routines, Schedules, and Plans

Perhaps the
most important point. Canines and felines thrive on a routine. They’ll tell you if you’re even a minute late to their usual feeding time. They know when to wait at the door or window for your return from work. Intentionally craft your new pet’s routine so it can fit your schedule too. It will make for a happy fur baby!

Don’t Expect the Perfect Pet Immediately

Accidents are going to happen.
You’re going to get frustrated at times. This is completely normal! Be patient. This new adjustment period, transition, and training are going to take a little bit of time. Try to not bite off too much at a time when it comes to feeding, training, and potty time. It will take a moment to turn the ship!
